Project Proposal
For my LINK internship I will be going to New York City to work with a company called Flightpath. Flightpath is a digital design agency that specializes in web design and app development. Their mission is to provide businesses with reliable and effective websites and apps for use by a specific company or anyone else. Their role in the community is to provide as many clients as possible with websites, apps, and ads to help their business advance towards success.
While the owner of the company is the man I initially made contact with, the person I will likely be doing most of my work with is a man by the name of Steven Louie. His position is head and lead designer for Flightpath, this means that at the moment, he is the best man to be my mentor as he is working in the field that I hope to work in someday. My hope is that my time spent with Steven and at Flightpath will open my eyes to the business side of graphic design as well as to further and expand upon my current store of knowledge about design of any sort.
Most of goals for my future involve in some way, graphic design or work with computers, these both have the potential to be relevant in my internship as I will be doing design work for the company and maybe even a little bit of the more complex coding behind websites and apps. Having the chance to experience first hand what it would be like to work in that field is crucial because it allows me to decide if it’s something that I really want to get into or not.
At this time, I do not know what my project will end up being. All that I know right now is that during the internship, I will be helping out with whatever project Flightpath has active at the time. Perhaps it could be me designing a page of a website in terms of aesthetics or maybe it could be something more along the lines of hanging back a bit more and documenting what goes on at a company like Flightpath. Whatever I end up doing for my project, I hope it at least teaches me the routine of day to day business at a design company.
The knowledge required to go into a position like this is stuff that I already for the most part know. To be more prepared for my internship, I could do some more practice in photoshop and other programs of the stuff I am likely to be or will be doing during my internship. Skills that I should definitely develop further before my internship are all my photoshop, illustrator, and photography knowledge and techniques. I should also, if I i have time, try and learn some HTML (probably 5) code so that I have a better understanding of what web design is all about.
Steps i’ll take to complete the project during LINK so that I will be ready to show it at the exhibition are fairly simply. Since I have never really been one to plan for anything, the steps I will take depend largely on what the context of the situation is and what needs to get done first. This kind of method has worked for me for years and I believe that it will continue to work for years to come. I imagine I will come home every day, take a nap, and then do the respectful amount of work for that day for my project or anything else that needs to get done. The only resource/thing I don’t have that I think I will need (at this time) is the plotter because I may have to print something large out. Since I do not know what my project is at this time, I can only take a guess at what i’ll need to complete it fully. To my understanding, what I need for this project and internship are; laptop, graphic tablet, camera, and any school supplies. It would be nice to have access to a large screen on which I could build my project and do work for FlightPath.
There have been only a few challenges worth noting that have come from the process of arranging this internship, the largest of them all was thinking of what to do and where to do it. So far I have handled all challenges with this that come my way with relative ease. It seems now the last challenge is getting to New York and beginning the internship. I have learned from all of these (past, present, and future) challenges that while things may be tedious at first, they can be overcome in time.
So far, the emotions that surround the idea of going away for almost a month to a big city and working with people I do not know have been surprisingly manageable. I think this is mainly because I am a seasoned traveler and am incredibly fast at adapting to getting quickly submerged into a society that I don’t know in a place that is unfamiliar. My thoughts about the internship have been bounding back and forth between complete confidence and general uneasiness, I would’t say fear is really ever a part of this, just me questioning whether or not i’ll be able to get to know the people i’ll be working with quickly and if i’ll be able to figure out the complexity of NYC quickly.
